Mark Sibley

Mark Sibley graduated in 1999 from the University of Northampton with a degree in Fine Art.

Mark's paintings are large in scale and are resulting from a specific interest in the deconstruction and fragmentation of imagery, both stylistically and politically. They consist of many canvases, sometimes up to 50 for one image.

Mark varies his painting style - some works are polished and some could be described as raw and unfinished. His aim is certainly not to have a photographic representation, but rather a combination of the figurative and the more intuitive abstractions of pattern in positive and negative space, embracing the dialectic between figuration and abstraction.

Mark's drawings, on a smaller scale, represent a similar theme of obliteration and reconstruction, and certainly inform his painting style. The broader themes in his work investigate the mechanisms and modes of painting, its relationships with the image, as contrast or complimentary, and how this resonates with the viewer.

Mark's work has an international following and is popular with both private and corporate collectors. For further information regarding exhibitions and commissions, please visit: www.marksibleyart.co.uk

Process plays an important role in my work, from my large scale fragmented paintings of the face, to my monochromatic circular formed works with more emphasis on pattern. Painting is transitory and  ambiguous changing from one open ended point to another. This is why I strive for an image that works in its purest state, that of its subject ( the paint itself ) working in conjunction with its vehicle  which in my case is the human face. I am interested in the dialectic between the abstract and the figurative and their percieved narrative. I believe painterly obstacles are important in my work, to direct the viewer ( I hope ) towards a dual appraisal of the image as a whole and it delineated fragments at closer scrutiny.
